Beading in 3D, 120-cell 3D printed models and more

Thursday, 12 November 2015 by Bruce Rawles

Half of a 120-cell (3D printed model)

I received a general question via email from a visitor to GeometryCode.com interested in beading 3-dimensional shapes. Here are the results of my explorations in the process of very quickly researching this question, and my response:

Since your original question was about beading – although many of these may not have geometric aspects of interest – here are some example of 3D beading quite a few example videos of 3D beading that might be helpful.

Since a new dimension is being added (with infinite variations on what can be added to go from 2D to 3D) there are numerous ways to make a 3D pattern from a 2D pattern; these include:

  1. extruding (translation of ) a 2D shape: just making identical copies of the 2D pattern stacked atop each other
  2. rotation or reflection of a 2D shape around either the X or Y (or another axis in the plane of the 2D image)
  3. using other symmetry or symmetries within the 2D object(s) to replicate aspects into the z-axis
  4. countless other variations …

If you already have a 3D image in mind (such as you will find in Sacred Geometry Design Sourcebook on pages 189 (Great Pyramid fold-up model) or Platonic and Archimedean Solids, variations, etc. 196-229 or (space filling polyhedra and close-packing of spheres on page 239, for example) you already have a 3-dimensional pattern to start with. If you have a specific media (such as beading, stained glass, wood-working, welding, Zometool, 3D printing, magnetic spheres, or countless other media variations), you will have other constraints and opportunities to explore. In order to assist further, I would need to know which image on which page in SGDS – since there are over 1300 images in the book! – you have in mind to use for your 3D design.

If you want to make a prototype (or multiple identical copies) you might want to explore 3D printing. There are now somewhat affordable 3D printers, and lots of local 3D printing services. Here’s an example (the “Half of a 120-cell” image on this page) of a 3D-printed geometric shape with kudos to Henry Segerman and Saul Schleimer. Be sure to watch the videos in addition to on this page about the associated images, such as Quintessence (which evidently is also a 3D/4D puzzle/toy which looks wonderful), Triple helix, and Triple gear; fascinating! … and don’t forget to check out the 3D art of Bathsheba who has some exquisite 3D geometric art. :-)

Fibonacci- Icosahedron by Rafael Araujo

Vibration Station Conversation – The Geometry Code Book: Chapter 1

Great Pyramid - Sphinx - Compass - InfinityDave Cohen (a.k.a. Davie Crockett) and I shared this conversation about “The Question of Identity: Two Thought Systems” which is Chapter 1 from the book The Geometry Code: Universal Symbolic Mirrors of Natural Laws Within Us; Friendly Reminders of Inclusion to Forgive the Dreamer of Separation on 23 August 2015, on his LA Talk Radio show.

We talked about how examining the contents of our mind reveals two mutually exclusive thought systems: the kind, all-inclusive, 100% sane transpersonal thought system that make use of all symbols (including geometric ones) for the benefit of all … and the 100% insane ‘me first’ we/they personal thought system of ego, which denies shared interests in favor of special, separate interests.

This interview is part of an ongoing series where we discuss one chapter (about one per month) from The Geometry Code book until we’ve gone through all 10 chapters, including the 7 Hermetic Laws from the Kybalion and related geometric symbols.

I always enjoy connecting with both recent and long-time friends and colleagues and discovering new friends of friends :-)Thanks for your interest & support! :-) BTW, I always appreciate enthusiastic reviews on the Amazon SGDS book page, and the newer Amazon book page for The Geometry Code. It’s a good “win-win” way to cross-promote your work as well.

If you like to color with colored pencils (or other media), make 3-D fold-up geometric art, do stained glass, quilts, geometric arts and/or crafts, or just want an extensive reference/resource of geometric archetypes, patterns and essential line art, you might enjoy a copy of my first book, Sacred Geometry Design Sourcebook: Universal Dimensional Patterns.

If your leanings are more metaphysical … and perhaps whimsical :-) … you might enjoy my second book, The Geometry Code: Universal Symbolic Mirrors of Natural Laws Within Us; Friendly Reminders of Inclusion to Forgive the Dreamer of Separation. It was originally going to have geometry and Hermetic Laws/symbolism as a primary focus, but in 2007, a reawakened interest in the spiritual masterpiece, A Course In Miracles – thanks to Gary Renard – shifted the primary emphasis to an exploration of the two thought fundamental systems we all vacillate between, and how we can gradually shift our mind’s identity to the happy one.

Vibration Station Dimension Conversation

Orthogonal Cartesian CoordinatesDave Cohen (a.k.a. Davie Crockett) and I shared this conversation about our dualistic dimensions and dizzying dimensionality on 19 July 2015, on his LA Talk Radio show. We started our talk by looking at space and time … and ended up exploring our universally shared origin of Oneness. :-)

  • Martin Gray’s “Places of Peace and Power” website is always a visual treat for virtual visits to vibrant parts of the planet; his commentary adds to the appreciation of egalitarian inclusiveness, encouraging compassion, tolerance and kindness, since we’re all in the same Culture! :-) … and shifting the scale from terrestrial to both extremes of space:
  • Reality doesn’t exist until we measure it, quantum experiment confirms – Doesn’t it seem that most of the time, we still act as though modern physics never happened? :-) “… reality does not exist if you are not looking at it.”
  • Six Things Everyone Should Know About Quantum Physics (another quick slideshow reminder that, as Werner Heisenberg said, “Not only is the universe stranger than we think, it is stranger than we can think.”
  • Some physicists believe we’re living in a giant hologram — and it’s not that far-fetched … we probably won’t see ‘unconscious guilt’ as the underlying purpose for the universe in physics books any time soon, but it’s still interesting to follow how modern physics keeps leading inexorably back to the mind. :-)

  • ESPL: Dances of the Planets – We’ve featured John Martineau’s solar system geometries before, but it’s been a while; here are some elegant illustrations of a few of his discoveries; thanks to Nancy B. for sending this our way.

Vibration Station Conversation: Emoto, Cymatics, Mentalism, Polarity and more…

Dave Cohen - Good Vibration Station-LA talk Radio

Dave Cohen (a.k.a. Davie Crockett) and I shared this conversation on 28 June 2015, on his LA Talk Radio show. We began with talking about the work of Masuru Emoto, Hans Jenny, quantum technology, mind (of course!) and migrated into a variety of geometric and metaphysical subjects; the usual fun whirlwind dialogue. Third eye dilation, anyone? :-)

Sunflower Head - Fibonacci Sequence Animation by Cristóbal Vila

(2) Websites, Books, Videos, Imagery, Music and Quotes

  • Fibonacci Sequence Animation video by Cristóbal Vila (with music by Wim Mertens) – Excellent animation of whirling squares (see image below), spirals morphing into a Chambered Nautilus, the Golden Ratio, the Golden Angle (137.507°) morphing into a sunflower head (see image above), dragonfly wings, and the hexagonal grid of an insects eye.
  • Another article hinting (perhaps indirectly?) that mind might be the basis for our holographic dream of a cosmos: Some physicists believe we’re living in a giant hologram — and it’s not that far-fetched
  • I recently (June 14, 2015) gave an audio visual presentation (via Skype) for Starr Fuentes’ 11th Annual Light Language Conference. My presentation was entitled “Metaphysics, Symbolism, Sacred Geometry and the The Geometry Code: Universal Symbolic Mirrors of Natural Laws Within Us; Friendly Reminders of Inclusion to Forgive the Dreamer of Separation.” Thanks to Starr for inviting me and Sean for his technical support. :-)
