Beading in 3D, 120-cell 3D printed models and more

I received a general question via email from a visitor to GeometryCode.com interested in beading 3-dimensional shapes. Here are the results of my explorations in the process of very quickly researching this question, and my response:

Since your original question was about beading – although many of these may not have geometric aspects of interest – here are some example of 3D beading quite a few example videos of 3D beading that might be helpful.

Since a new dimension is being added (with infinite variations on what can be added to go from 2D to 3D) there are numerous ways to make a 3D pattern from a 2D pattern; these include:

extruding (translation of ) a 2D shape: just making identical copies of the 2D pattern stacked atop each other
rotation or reflection of a 2D shape around either the X or Y (or another axis in the plane of the 2D image)
using other symmetry or symmetries within the 2D object(s) to replicate aspects into the z-axis
countless other variations …

If you already have a 3D image in mind (such as you will find in Sacred Geometry Design Sourcebook on pages 189 (Great Pyramid fold-up model) or Platonic and Archimedean Solids, variations, etc. 196-229 or (space filling polyhedra and close-packing of spheres on page 239, for example) you already have a 3-dimensional pattern to start with. If you have a specific media (such as beading, stained glass, wood-working, welding, Zometool, 3D printing, magnetic spheres, or countless other media variations), you will have other constraints and opportunities to explore. In order to assist further, I would need to know which image on which page in SGDS – since there are over 1300 images in the book! – you have in mind to use for your 3D design.

If you want to make a prototype (or multiple identical copies) you might want to explore 3D printing. There are now somewhat affordable 3D printers, and lots of local 3D printing services. Here’s an example (the “Half of a 120-cell” image on this page) of a 3D-printed geometric shape with kudos to Henry Segerman and Saul Schleimer. Be sure to watch the videos in addition to on this page about the associated images, such as Quintessence (which evidently is also a 3D/4D puzzle/toy which looks wonderful), Triple helix, and Triple gear; fascinating! … and don’t forget to check out the 3D art of Bathsheba who has some exquisite 3D geometric art. :-)

Our Virtual Reality Video of the Mind

Dave Cohen (a.k.a. Davie Crockett) and I shared a conversation on 17 May 2015, on his LA Talk Radio show starting with the article noted below Quantum Entanglement Verified: Why Space Is Just The Construct That Gives The Illusion Of Separate Objects, and moved from there into subjects like holography and the notion that we can benefit from considering that our mind projects it’s own unimaginably vast and complex virtual reality movie, 24/7/365; movies such as Truman Show, Matrix, Men in Black, and even Horton Hears a Who are pondered as metaphors.

Many thanks to Jim Sather, who contacted me noticed a couple of errata in Sacred Geometry Design Sourcebook (SGDS page 243) and on the Polyhedra: Math Tables for Platonic And Archimedean Solids page; both now fixed: (1) For the snub cube, the 142°59′ entry was moved from the 4-4 column to the 3-4 column, and (2) for the snub dodecahedron, no angles are listed for the 3-8, 4-5 columns. The latter fix was not needed in the book, but somehow crept into the table on the website. Any books printed after 1June2015 will have the corrections. Much appreciated!

Mutation game – prototype

Inventor Mark White recently sent me a prototype – check out his KickStarter campaign – for his very cool new “Mutation” game which allows 4 white and 4 black ‘knobs’ to traverse the edges of a colorful dodecahedron. You get an intuitive and kinesthetic sense of the shape and its topology by traversing the edges and it has a good ‘feel’ in your hand. The goal of one of many possible games is to be the first to make your 4 knobs (white or black) into a tetrahedral pattern. Here’s a bright youngster at a recent science event I participated in playing with the proto.

More fun with Zometool

At the aforementioned educational event (the Castle Rock, Colorado library “Full STEAM Ahead program” Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics) last weekend, I set up a demo showing a recursive video animation I did of the nested Platonic solids on my laptop … along with a 3d model made from ZomeTool which some of the young event participants helped me to add to, making a sort of quasi-partially-truncated inner-stellation (nowhere near mathematically correct jargon, but you kinda get the idea :-) of a cube with green and blue struts which enclosed the outermost octahedron. Fun! :-)

Kindle edition of The Geometry Code turned 2 yesterday

Amazing that it’s already been a couple of years since I released the Kindle edition of the book: The Geometry Code: Universal Symbolic Mirrors of Natural Laws Within Us; Friendly Reminders of Inclusion to Forgive the Dreamer of Separation … You can read more about this geometric/Hermetic/metaphysical romp here, and download the first chapter for free here. Recently I participated in my wife’s staff day – she works for the local library – and I brought my Zometool kit to share. New website for University of Colorado Boulder’s English Department

We just went live last week with a new website I developed and customized for University of Colorado Boulder’s English Department; here’s more detail along with a “before” snapshot of this major site overhaul. An Adorata Virtue Course is being offered by our dear friend, Jodine Turner; Adorata, Latin for “beloved,” is a body of teachings and a spiritual path where the goal is an increased ability to receive, sustain, and give love in all its forms.
